This screen is not intended for children who have a diagnosed heart condition and are followed by a cardiologist. The screen is intended to identify undiagnosed heart disease and should not be a substitute for a cardiology visit or follow-up testing.

ABOUT

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of sudden death in young people and is typically the result of undiagnosed structural or electrical heart disease.

What is sudden cardiac death in the young people?
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the result of an unexpected failure of proper heart function, usually during or immediately after exercise without trauma. Since the heart stops pumping adequately, the child quickly collapses, loses consciousness, and ultimately dies unless normal heart rhythm is restored using an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Integrated screening programs such as the Play for Patrick event, utilizing ECG/EKG, offer the only model proven to reliably identify children at risk for SCD, and the only model with evidence suggesting early detection can reduce the rate of SCD in young people.

The Play for Patrick works with other programs to help protect our young people and communities by providing early detection, early access to defibrillation, CPR/AED education and awareness as we train the next generation of “first responders”.

The Play for Patrick youth heart screening is available to youths 14-18 years old and the program consists of: A Heart Health Survey investigating signs and symptoms/family history of a cardiac condition, blood pressure, physical exam, ECG and an on-site echocardiogram.  Each screen takes approximately 45 minutes including CPR/AED training.

The Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation was created in memory of Patrick Schoonover, a young talented athlete who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while playing hockey and died at age 14.
